I would like to share with you a nice review published in Molecular Cell in 2015. It summarizes in a clear and appealing way important results about codon usage bias, how it may influence translation and how understanding the principles of codon bias and translation can contribute to improved protein production and developments in synthetic biology. Works of Tamir and Hadas are extensively cited and discussed.
I would recommend this review both to new students as a good introduction to the field, to more experienced ones as a material which could be helpful for writing their own works, and in general to every one who would like to refresh his knowledge / understanding in the field of codon usage bias and its relation to translation and synthetic biology
